On November 6th, at the beautiful Rancho Bernardo Country Club in San Diego, California, Serving California happily joined our partner the Training Center for their 2nd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament. Major League Baseball player Gene Locklear honored MLB Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers as the special celebrity guest for this year’s tournament. Dennis Martinez, World Champion Skateboarder, and Founder of the Training Center, invited many of his friends from the skateboarding community and other professional sports athletes to hit the course for a day of golf and fellowship.
Training Center, founded in 2005, is a California State licensed drug and alcohol treatment center, as well as a major Southern California faith-based reentry facility. Founder Dennis Martinez, a World Champion Freestyle Skateboarder, has a special heart for men in need and has found many ways for these men to “give back” to the communities from which many have damaged through crime and drug use. The annual Gun Buy-back program, community X-Fest events, food give-a-ways, family reunification, speaking at elementary schools with a anti-drug, anti-gang and anti-bullying program, partnering with the San Diego Police Department’s juvenile diversion program, gang intervention, as well as successfully delivering the most successful “Lifer Program” in the state are only a few of the things Training Center does to give back to the community.
The day started with Dennis telling the 160+ golfers the importance of their support and how it will impact many men’s lives that rely on the Training Center’s home. A few of the men who are currently clients of the Training Center were on duty, judging the hole-in-one contests, helping with registration and doing what they could to make the day a success. To hear these men tell their stories, from one only being out of prison for one month, to another that has been out for over a year and is thriving in his new life, was a testament to the transformative work being done at Training Center.
The day ended with a nice dinner where guests were able to bid on a variety of silent and live auction items and the winners of the day were celebrated. There was also an arm wrestling competition between the golfers and a husband and wife world champion arm wrestling duo. The tournament raised over $15,000 for the Training Center.
