Why Do We Celebrate Veterans Day?

This is a day to honor those who serve our nation, and those who served before them.

Do you ever wonder why we celebrate Veterans Day every year? If so, you're not alone - a shocking number of Americans observe this holiday every year without a clear understanding of its origin, its significance, and its purpose.

Allow us to dispel any confusion with a brief explainer on this meaningful holiday, and information on how we'll be celebrating at Serving California.

Let's start with the date - November 11th. Veterans Day (formerly known as Armistice Day, for reasons we'll explain) was first observed on November 11, 1919 - the anniversary of the end of World War 1. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11th became a national holiday beginning in 1938.

It's important to honor our military heroes - both the living and those who are no longer with us.

In 1954, President Eisenhower officially changed the name of Armistice Day (an armistice is an agreement made by two opposing sides in a war to stop fighting, hence the term being applied to the end of WWI) to Veterans Day, signifying the purpose of Veterans Day - it is a day that we honor our military servicemen and women, both living and dead, and celebrate their service to our country. This is the key distinction between Veterans Day and Memorial Day - Memorial Day is a day to honor those warriors who are no longer with us.

Similar observances take place in countries across the world on or near November 11th: Canada observes Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November). Additionally, Britain and the Commonwealth countries observe two minutes of silence at 11:00 AM every November 11th.

So what are YOU doing to honor veterans this Friday? At Serving California, we're so proud to partner with our friends over at the Mighty Oaks Warrior Programs, and we work alongside them to provide quality programs to our nation's heroes who are struggling with the effects of PTSD and combat trauma. We encourage you to engage with us on Facebook, and stay tuned over the next few days to follow (and participate in!) our observance of this important time. Truly, this week, we are striving #2HonorThem - please join us.
